The Choir of Saint George's Parish Church, Belfast

The long established musical tradition of the Parish supports a choir of Men and Boy Choristers -one of the few such choirs in the Church of Ireland.

Traditionally, the church recruits boys from schools in the Belfast area; and though mainly Anglican, the choir draws its membership from all religious traditions and backgrounds.

It provides music for the Parish Church, undertakes tours, sings regularly in concerts, and has been heard on both television and radio. In 1996 the choir recorded a CD entitled 'Sing, My Soul'.

The boys rehearse with the Organist and Director of Music twice a week, and choir duties involve Sung Eucharist on Sunday  at 11.00 am and Choral Evensong at 5.00 pm.

The repertoire the choir sings ranges from the Renaissance to the present day, and a chorister participates in an experience which gives him a love, knowledge and understanding of some of the finest choral music ever written.

A chorister at Saint George's not only receives an excellent musical training but also benefits tremendously from working as part of a team; gaining self-discipline and a sense of responsibility. He becomes part of a tradition which has sung the praises of God over many generations.

Joining the Choir

There are vacancies in this well known choir for boys aged between 7 and 9. The Director of Music is always happy to see prospective choristers and their parents. A short interview involves tests for the ear, the voice, and also reading ability. If a boy is successful he will be asked to join the choir as a Probationer, meeting once a week. After a period of time spent working at voice production, repertoire and music theory, he will be admitted to the main choir.
